How to Clean A Salt Cell

Sometimes salt cells will get calcium built up on the blades inside and cause the cell not to work. If the cell light is flashing green it might need to be cleaned. Here is how!

1. Remove the two unions of the salt cell from your plumbing and unplug the cell from its power source. If the unions are too tight you might need a pair of channel locks to losen them.

2. First spray down the blades from both ends with a garden hose that has a jet nozzle attached. This will take off a majority of the calcium and then you'll get a better clean when you acid wash it.

3. In a plastic bucket, mix together 1 qt of muriatic acid with 1 quart of water.

4. Use a #12 plug to cap off one end of the cell.

5. Pour the diluted acid mixture into the salt cell, trying not to spill on the outside of the cell. If you do just rinse it off with tap water. Once you pour enough mixture to sumberge the blades a foaming should start to happen. If a foaming does not happen, the blades do NOT need to be cleaned so move on to the next step. If it does start to foam keep the acid mixute in until the foaming stops.

6. Rinse the inside and outside of the cell with clean tap water. If you can still see the calcium build up, repeat the acid cleaning process. If not reinstall the cell and resume normal function.

*If your cell has a lot of calcium built up, you should check your calcium hardness level. Ideal range is 200-400*

*If after acid washing your cell, the cell light is still flashing, the cell is old and needs to be replaced*
